Question 1

Can this be sung by a Christmas choir?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The melody and harmonies are simple and repeated, and the new bridges are written in three parts for choirs to add lift.

Question 2

Can a congregation sing it without a choir?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The verses use the familiar Wexford Carol tune, and the bridges repeat the angels' words, so they are quick to pick up.

Question 3

Where does it fit in Nine Lessons and Carols?

Accepted Answer

Straight after the Luke 2 reading about the shepherds and the angels.

Question 4

Do I need to report it to CCLI?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Report each use under CCLI song #7184141, including when you livestream it.

Question 5

What are good carols for a Christmas carol service?

Accepted Answer

Carol services and Nine Lessons and Carols usually look for songs that tell the Christmas story, give the choir a moment to shine and leave room for quiet wonder. A Wexford Carol (Do Not Be Afraid) works after the Luke 2 reading or as a choir item, Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence as an opening or at communion, and the instrumental Love Came Down at Christmas as a prelude or reflective moment.

Question 6

Why sing A Wexford Carol?

Accepted Answer

It is a fresh setting of one of Ireland's oldest carols that brings out the drama of Luke 2, adding angelic chorus lines, echoes and counter-melodies so the angels' messages, 'Do not be afraid' and 'Glory to the King', ring out. It suits pre-rolls and livestreams, telling the Christmas story, and Nine Lessons and Carols.
