When a song needs to do more with less.

Leading worship with limited instrumentation — possibly just guitar and voices — can feel like a delicate balance. Without a band to reinforce momentum, melody and lyrical clarity must carry the congregation.

I spent roughly half my early musical life leading worship and the other half busking. In both environments I learned the same thing: if the melody is strong and the structure is clear, people will start singing when you give them clarity and confidence. Transitional chords tell you where the song is going next. A great Melody helps everyone anticipate where the song is going. That sense of confidence is essential, especially when resources are minimal.

That approach has shaped my songwriting ever since. I love exploring and givng a fresh expression to melodies that have been 'road tested' and survived the centuries. Like old house locations,they're often the best!  Simple, robust, all-inclusive folk-rooted structures. Memorable melodic flow. Lyrics that matter. Songs that a congregation can grasp rapidly, sing with conviction, and carry with them into the week ahead.

When your team is small, pick good songs. Strong song selection is your greatest instrument.
